About this book

Undaunted Courage is both a biography of Meriwether Lewis and an account of the expedition he led with William Clark from 1804 to 1806, journeying up the Missouri River, across the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific and back. It also follows Lewis's close relationship with Thomas Jefferson, who planned the expedition, and his troubled final years.

Stephen E. Ambrose writes with real enthusiasm for the landscapes and the men of the Corps of Discovery, drawing on the expedition's journals to recreate their hardships and discoveries. The book covers the expedition's encounters with Native American nations, on whose help the travellers often depended, as well as the scientific goals Jefferson set for the journey.

It is above all an adventure story, told with real momentum and affection for its characters. For the later history of the West and the conflicts that followed, continue with Empire of the Summer Moon, or browse more titles on our Americas shelf.
