About this book

Yuval Noah Harari's book surveys the history of our species, Homo sapiens, from its emergence alongside other human species to the present day. He organises the story around a few major turning points: the development of language and imagination, the shift to farming, the unification of humankind through money, empires and religions, and the rise of modern science.

Harari's central idea is that humans cooperate in large numbers by believing in shared stories, such as nations, laws and currencies. He uses this idea to connect topics that are usually studied separately, and he regularly pauses to ask whether these changes actually made people happier.

The book stands out for its sweep and its willingness to provoke. Some of its claims are contested, and readers should treat it as an invitation to debate rather than a textbook, but it is undeniably thought-provoking. It pairs well with Guns, Germs, and Steel, which tackles similar questions from a different angle.
